History of the Department

Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Department of Health was responsible for providing statistics courses to the students of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences since 1951. In 1976 the newly separated Department of Social Medicine assumed responsibility of courses in biostatistics and epidemiology; and biostatistics, research methodology and epidemiology was taught by faculty members with Ph.D degrees in biostatistics. After follow-ups, an independent Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology was formed at School of Health in 2008.

The Department accepted 4 MSc students in the first year. Since its foundation, a total of 55 MSc students have matriculated to the Department, of which 35 graduated and 18 could admit to PhD programs in various Iranian universities. It also accepted PhD students in biostatistics since September 2016 and currently has 20 MSc and 2 PhD students. In the fall of 2016, following a visit by Iranian Board of Epidemiology and according to their recommendation, the name of the Department was changed to ‘Epidemiology and Biostatistics’.

 

 

Introduction to the discipline and it branches

Biostatistics is a branch of (applied) statistics focused on development and application of statistical methods to address problems and answer questions in healthcare, medicine, and human genetics and biology.
